How To Clean A Jute Rug

Are you looking for tips on how to clean a jute rug? You’ve come to the right place! Jute rug cleaning is very doable. So whether your jute rug needs an overall deep clean or you’re looking to clean pet stains, food spills or other spots from your rug, read on for the best methods for jute rug cleaning.

Cleaning A Jute Rug

Jute rugs are made from natural plant fibers and is one of the most popular natural fibers (second only to cotton) produced for a variety of uses. It’s not only affordable but super durable and lightweight making it a great choice for rugs.

There are many ways to clean a jute rug. Follow these surefire tips to keep your jute rug looking like new.

Shake It Out

Any rug can benefit from a good shake out every now and then and a jute rug is no exception.

  • Take your jute rug outside, and while firmly holding onto the corners, give the rug a powerful shake. Keep shaking until it appears that all the dirt, crumbs and debris have come out.
  • For large jute rugs, hang the rug from a railing or fence and give it a good beating using a broomstick or other strong stick. Beat both sides of the rug to make sure all debris is removed.
  • Leave the rug outside in the sun for a short time to help kill any bacteria or mildew that may be hiding in the rug.

Vacuum

Vacuum your jute rug regularly to remove dust, dirt and debris.

  • Jute rugs tend to shed grass fibers leaving dust under the rug. At least once a week, vacuum both sides of the rug as well as under the rug to keep any jute dust from accumulating and becoming a nuisance.

Spot Clean

Immediately clean spots and spills from your jute rug to keep them from staining.

  • Use a clean cloth and warm (not hot) water to clean spills as they happen.
  • Be sure to blot the area, not rub as rubbing can push the stain deeper into the fibers.
  • For solid spills or spots that are dried, use the edge of a spoon to remove as much solid material as possible.
  • Brush the spot with a stiff bristled brush and then vacuum.
  • Use a clean cloth and water to remove the stain.
  • Acidic stains (like wine or tomato sauce) can be neutralized and removed with club soda.
  • For stubborn stains, try blotting with a small amount of mild soap diluted in water. Once the stain is gone, blot the area several times with clean water to remove the soap.

Use Water...But Not Too Much

Jute is super absorbent and will hold onto water and other liquids. If they’re not allowed to dry completely, jute rugs will mold. That’s why it’s important to use as little water as possible when cleaning jute rugs.

  • We don’t recommend soaking jute rugs and powerwashing is a no-no.
  • If you do end up getting your jute rug wet, allow it to completely dry before placing it back on the rug pad.
  • If it’s possible, hang your rug outside in the sun as this will help to kill any mold or mildew.

Dry Cleaning

You can purchase a dry cleaning powder that works with jute and natural fiber rugs online or in cleaning supply stores. Sprinkle the powder onto the rug and then vacuum the powder up. Dirt and debris will come out with the cleaning powder.
